Risk factors

Some factors that may increase the risk of developing Borderline Personality Disorder include:

  • unstable or neglectful childhood
  • developmental stress such as trauma and abuse
  • having a close family member such as a parent or sibling with Borderline Personality Disorder or similar mental health condition 

Causes

As with many conditions, there is no single cause of Borderline Personality Disorder. Factors that BPD may be linked to include biological factors such as brain chemicals, functioning of different areas of the brain such as emotional regulation and impulsivity, and genetic factors. 

Symptoms Diagnosis
