Psychological Injury

Risk factors

Psychological injuries in the workplace result from a complex interplay of factors, including job-related stressors, individual vulnerabilities, and external influences. Identifying and addressing these risk factors is essential for creating a supportive work environment and promoting mental health and well-being.

Causes

  • Workplace Stress: High levels of stress due to workload, deadlines, or unrealistic expectations can lead to anxiety and depression.
  • Bullying and Harassment: Persistent negative behaviour towards an employee, such as intimidation, exclusion, or verbal abuse, can cause significant psychological harm.
  • Exposure to Traumatic Events: Employees in certain roles, such as first responders or those working in high-risk environments, may be exposed to traumatic events that can lead to PTSD or other mental health issues.
  • Lack of Support: Insufficient support from management or colleagues can exacerbate feelings of isolation, stress, and anxiety.
  • Poor Work-Life Balance: An imbalance between work demands and personal life can lead to burnout, chronic stress, and mental health deterioration.
