Psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and other evidence-based therapies have been shown to be effective in treating mood disorders. The overall goals of psychological treatment will be to understand and better manage the symptoms and their impact, strengthen coping strategies, and improve functioning and overall wellbeing. Treatment may be individual or in a group.
Medication may be prescribed by a medical professional to stabilise the mood episodes. The type of medication that could be prescribed include mood stabilisers and/or antipsychotic medication, antidepressants, or anticonvulsants.
Other allied health therapy or supports is often used alongside medical treatment to support wellbeing holistically.
