Factors that are associated with a greater risk of developing depression include:

  • experiencing stressful or traumatic events
  • long-term stress including financial, social, living conditions  
  • long-term pressures
  • having other mental health conditions
  • poor social and other support structures 

Causes

The causes of depression can be due to a combination of factors. These can include:

  • illness  
  • ageing
  • other medical issues
  • other mental health conditions
  • biological, genetic, and personality or temperament factor
