Anxiety Disorders

Psychological therapy has been shown to be effective in treating anxiety. Therapy can address the underlying influences and triggers of anxiety, support the development of helpful coping strategies, and support positive lifestyle changes. Common psychological methods used to address anxiety include: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Treatments such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) which focus on distress tolerance can also help some individuals. Therapy can be individual, group, in person, or online.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an effective and the most widely used form of psychological therapy for anxiety disorders. Usually a short-term treatment, you learn specific skills to manage and improve your symptoms in order to gradually return to the activities you've avoided because of your anxiety symptoms.

Medical treatment includes medication which may be prescribed and supervised by a medical professional (most commonly either your GP, Psychiatrist or Psychogeriatrician). Medications commonly prescribed include anti-anxiety medications or antidepressants.

Other therapies may include sleep hygiene, self-help, complementary or lifestyle therapies such as exercise, nutrition, yoga, relaxation, and meditation techniques.
