Dr Bruce Lachter

Professional background

Dr Bruce Lachter is a consultant psychiatrist with over 25 years of psychodynamic psychotherapy experience in clinical, teaching, and supervisory roles. The psychodynamic approach recognises how developmental trauma and deprivation can lead to addictions and other conditions, including depressive and anxiety disorders. Old 'stress responses' - which may have worked in the past - can become maladaptive over time. Dr Lachter's emphasis on understanding means that he works with each patient's unique experiences, but also acknowledges he is not the best fit for those seeking a more generic 'quick-fix' medication approach. Sometimes there is meaning in what may otherwise be treated as a 'symptom' or 'psychiatric condition'. One such dilemma is the question of unresolved grief presenting as depression. His wholistic approach to psychological health - which does of course have some generic applicability - considers how sleep, physical activity, nutrition, and social engagement affect our emotional states, including problems with mood and attention.
